And I don’t care.
If The Man and I had to say we had a “musical group” that was ours we would both say, “Journey”. If The Man and I were asked, “what is your song” we would both say, “Faithfully”. There’s something about being dirt poor, celebrating your 5th anniversary, driving around Washington, D.C. at night, with the tee tops off your brand new 1988 Camaro* with the Z28 engine, Journey blaring on the radio…
*we were dirt poor, but riding around in style!
Having watched Journey lose Steve Perry and then get the Steve Perry wannabe sorta soured me to the group for a bit. But The Man sent me a link this morning that I just had to share! For all of you who loved Steve Perry…here’s the story from idigbig.com and then the video.
JOURNEY FOUND NEW FILIPINO SINGER ON YOUTUBE
When JOURNEY and their latest lead singer, JEFF SCOTT SOTO, parted ways earlier this year, people were hoping they were clearing the way to reconcile with their legendary and WAY COOLEST singer, STEVE PERRY.Well yesterday, Journey announced that they have a singer again . . . but tragically, it is NOT Perry. Instead, it’s a Filipino gentleman named ARNEL PINEDA, who was in a cover band called THE ZOO . . . in the Philippines. In fact, the band actually “discovered” him on YouTube. Guitarist NEAL SCHON explains, quote, “I was frustrated about not having a singer . . . so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours.”I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. “After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, ‘he can’t be that good.’ But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. “Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter.”Naturally, Arnel is pretty stoked to suddenly be joining the REAL Journey. He says, quote, “It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans.”I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like ‘the voice’ [Steve Perry], but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world.”Here’s the YouTube clip . . . of Arnel singing “Faithfully” . . . that apparently blew Neal Schon’s mind. In fairness, he does sound eerily, Steve Perry-ish:
